The talented artist and curator behind Voices of Veterans is Mike Armstrong. Mike is a kind human who after 23 years in Army, now has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Mike has always been dedicated to service and now his pain has become his purpose. He bravely expresses his story, personal feelings and truth with others, to help others.
Michael (Mike) Armstrong is a veteran of the Australian Army, having served in East Timor, Afghanistan, Iraq and also as part of the Tactical Assault Group East. He is an award winning contemporary artist and author and works in a variety of mediums from his art studio in Canberra. Mike has a Bachelor of Arts, Masters of Arts in Creative Arts, and a Masters in Cyber Security.
After years of chronic pain and depression Mike was diagnosed with PTSD in 2020. He's dedicated to his wellbeing, his treatment and to supporting others with their mental health. Mike helps people through creative art or physical movement practice Brazilian JiuJitsu. Mike has shared some of his journey on social media.
Mike has art mentored people for several years. He helps veterans find their voice and tell their stories. He works collaboratively with Australian National Veterans Art Museum. Mike has experience running workshops on everything from classical oil painting, drawing, paint making, sculpting from life, drawing from life, portraiture, art framing, social media use for artists, art business, studio photography and composition and design.
